Toe Jam Puppet Band was the Bees Knees!

children at Toe Jam Puppet BandI can't begin to tell you how much fun was had at the Toe Jam Puppet Band performance on Tuesday night. It was unbelievable! There is nothing better than to see a large crowd of children with giggly smiles on their faces for an entire hour.

Tom and Vinny put the audience through their paces with barn dancing, car washing, elephant walking, bubble chasing, clothes washing, lawn mowing and so much more. I trust every child went home tired and ready for bed.

Be sure to check out the photo album of their antics and a video or two.

This performance was made possible in part through a Kids, Books and the Arts Grant sponsored by New Hampshire State Library, Byrne Foundation, CHILIS (not Chili's), Cogswell Benevolent Trust, and New Hampshire Library Association. Contributors to this and other great summer reading events include local sponsors Continental Paving, DLB Paving, Fred Fuller Oil Co., Jolt Electric, Litchfield Garage, New England Small Tube, Optimum Building Systems & Mgmt., Pantry Pride and Tim's Turf.

The Pillars of the Earth: From Novel to Television

Recently, patron and All Booked Up member, Sandra G. reported hearing that Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth was about to become a television series .

Pillars was a well received, and hefty, book club read two summers ago, which was followed by the sequel, World Without End, last summer.

This epic story of the building of a cathedral in 12th century England, and the lives of the people entwined with it and each other, is a sensuous, enduring narrative, and a gripping tale of faith, ambition, bloodshed and betrayal. (Barnes & Noble)

The 8-part series will air on the Starz network.

Join us on the library lawn on Tuesday, July 20th at 6:30 p.m. for a family-fun performance guaranteed to please young and old alike.

Said Robert Chiarito of The Wanderer Newspaper, "From the first song to the close of the show, the Toe Jam Puppet Band had their audience of kids and parents standing on their toes, clapping and spinning to the rhythm of the music and singing along to the band's infectious, pied piper like performance."

(Rain location: Litchfield Middle School Cafeteria)

This performance is made possible through a Kids, Books and the Arts Grant sponsored by New Hampshire State Library, Byrne Foundation, CHILIS (not Chili's), Cogswell Benevolent Trust, and New Hampshire Library Association.

The Frogs Were Indeed Fabulous!

bullfrogThe children had a super time on the library lawn yesterday with the Massabesic Audubon Center's presentation, Fabulous Frogs.

They got to meet a number of frogs, up close and personal, find out about their habits, their calls, and their anatomy.

Many children were happy to get nose-to-nose with the critters, while others wanted to keep a safe distance. (The definition of "safe distance" varied by child.)

A big thanks to Kim for a wonderful afternoon!

Manfiction in a Sea of Chick-lit

book coverDo men read? Borrow or buy books? Or is it all about women? That’s the general impression, especially when it comes to fiction. But is it really true?

Enter Stephen King. He argues “reports of the male reader’s death have been greatly exaggerated.” Publishers do sell a ton of “manfiction.” It may not always dominate the New York Times best seller list, or garner the lion’s share of publicity, but it’s no shrinking violet.

There are some great authors headlining the category. King recommends Jonathan Kellerman, Robert Crais, Richard Stark, Robert B. Parker, Michael Connelly and Lee Child. They are the yin to the ladies’ Nora Roberts/Sandra Brown/Jodi Picoult yang, delivering testosterone filled escape and entertainment.

If you have a reluctant male reader in your life who seems to be floundering in the sea of chick-lit, try getting one of these authors into his hands.

And let me end by saying “manfiction” isn’t just for men. Some of my favorite authors are Robert B. Parker, Jack Higgins, and W.E.B. Griffin. They make a nice cocktail when mixed with Janet Evanovich, Joanne Harris and Lorna Landvik. But does it work both ways? Do men read the female perspective as well?

What’s your experience?

transformer photo courtesy of drouu on sxc.huI just received the following message through the Litchfield Police Departments Nixle system:

Please be advised that PSNH will be taking an emergency outage at 6 a.m. tomorrow, Sat. July 10th, for up to 30 minutes to replace a damaged substation regulator at a substation on Depot Street in Merrimack.

We suspect that the cause of this equipment failure is the extended heat wave, which has increased the loading on the substation regulator and caused a mechanical malfunction was discovered today. The damaged equipment will be replaced tomorrow at 6 a.m. to minimize disruption to customers. Over the weekend, PSNH electricians will make permanent repairs. This should be transparent to the public.

Approximately 1,200 customers, mostly in Litchfield but also in Merrimack, will be impacted.

In Litchfield, 1,087 customers in the northern half of town (north of and excluding Pinecrest Ave) will be effected.

Make Waves Featured Novel: The Truth About Forever

book coverThe 2nd featured novel in the Make Waves @ Your Library tween and teen summer reading club is Sarah Dessen's The Truth About Forever. Grab a copy from the Teen Room and dive in!

From the Publisher
Macy's summer stretches before her, carefully planned and outlined. She will spend her days sitting at the library information desk. She will spend her evenings studying for the SATs. Spare time will be used to help her obsessive mother prepare for the big opening of the townhouse section of her luxury development.

But Macy's plans don't anticipate a surprising and chaotic job with Wish Catering, a motley crew of new friends, or . . . Wes. Tattooed, artistic, anything-but-expected Wes. He doesn't fit Macy's life at all&150so why does she feel so comfortable with him? So . . . happy? What is it about him that makes her let down her guard and finally talk about how much she misses her father, who died before her eyes the year before?

Sarah Dessen delivers a page-turning novel that carries readers on a roller coaster of denial, grief, comfort, and love as we watch a broken but resilient girl pick up the pieces of her life and fit them back together.

When Chef Anthony Bourdain wrote "Don't Eat Before You Read This" in The New Yorker, he spared no one's appetite, revealing what goes on behind the kitchen door. In Kitchen Confidential, he expanded that appetizer into a deliciously funny, delectable shocking banquet that lays out his 25 years of sex, drugs, and haute cuisine.

From his first oyster in the Gironde to the kitchen of the Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center, from the restaurants of Tokyo to the drug dealers of the East Village, from the mobsters to the rats, Bourdain's brilliantly written, wild-but-true tales make the belly ache with laughter.

Wifey is the Book of the Month in July

Judy Blume's Wifey is our featured novel for July. Pick up your copy at the Circulation Desk. Earn 1 Raffle Ticket for reading the book, and another if you submit an answer to a provided discussion question!

From the Publisher
Wifey is Judy Blume's hilarious, moving tale of a woman who trades in her conventional wifely duties for her wildest fantasies-and learns a lot about life along the way.

Sandy Pressman is a nice suburban wife whose boredom is getting the best of her. She could be making friends at the club, like her husband keeps encouraging her to do.

Or working on her golf game.
Or getting her hair done.

But for some reason, these things don't interest her as much as the naked man on the motorcycle...

Toe Jam Puppet Band, July 20th

tom, chris and vinnyYou may be wondering, "What is a 'Toe Jam Puppet Band'?" I know I did. Rest assured, I have been guaranteed they are super family fun entertainment!

The Toe Jam Puppet Band is an "exuberant, fun-filled, nonstop action program," offering a special brand of interactive children’s entertainment that grown-ups can actually enjoy. The dynamic group is great with kids, but best when parents are having fun with their children.

The performances are very active, encouraging kids and parents to sing and dance along with the band as they entertain with a unique combination of original songs, masterful shadow puppetry, storytelling and just plain old fun.

So join us on the library lawn on Tuesday, July 20th at 6:30 p.m.

Bring your friends! Bring your family! Bring your neighbors!

But please leave the pets at home.
